Norfolk’s Kirby Bedon Aux Unit Patrol have been added to our site. The secret operational base was located in a shed used for storing apple boxes and crates, in one of the extensive orchards adjoining The Grange in the 1940s.  It was accessed through a trapdoor in the floor which opened to a drop-down shaft with rungs serving as a ladder. The main chamber adjoined at the bottom of the shaft, with a short passage leading into it.

You can see all the info on the patrol  here

CART is getting ready for a very special weekend at Tottington Manor in West Sussex.

Tottington Manor was the Sussex headquarters of the Auxiliary Units. During World War II, Tottington played a role in the training of the Sussex Auxiliary Units. One large secret bunker exists under the Manor, with an escape route into the fields.  The tunnel network and bunker remain unchanged since the War ended, complete with plumbing and Bakelite light-switches.

Local historian and author Stewart Angell will be leading a series of talks on the Auxiliary Units and showing a film of the inside of the tunnels.  The event also sees Capt. Ian Benson return to the Manor after more than 70 years.

Mr. Benson is flying over from Ireland just for the event and he ran the activities at Tottington for part of the War as well as training Auxiliers all over the UK.

The event is ticket only and sold out within 3 days of the tickets going on sale.

In July last year we helped organise an event at Coleshill to mark the 70th anniversary of the Auxiliary Units.

At the time a young lady called Emma Colman was walking around quietly with a microphone interviewing people.

She was putting together a lasting audio memory of the day which she very kindly has said we can now play on the site. You can hear this amazing piece of work here and if you attended, you might even be on the tape.

Our thanks go to Emma for allowing us to showcase her work.
