It’s been a busy few days for the CART team!

Our Press Officer Andrew Chatterton delivered a talk to the Newton Poppleford Local Historical Society. Also our Devon researcher, Nina Hannaford brought along a display with information on the local patrols and Special Duties Branch which went down really well.

We already have a couple of new leads for both the Aux Units and Special Duties Branch in East Devon as a result. Thanks to all who attended and for the generous donations!

Tawstock Auxiliary Unit Patrol 4Today we have added a very detailed report on the Tawstock Auxiliary Unit Patrol in Devon.

Chirnside 4 Puckington OUT Station 2Today we have added a excellent report by Chris Perry and Nina Hannaford about Special Duties OUT Station located near Puckington in Somerset with the codename ‘Chirnside 4’.
The station would have communicated directly with “Chirnside Zero” at Castle Neroche near Buckland St Mary.

Farringdon is a small village 6 miles east of Exeter. This patrol report has been produced by our Devon CIO Nina Hannaford.

The patrol utilised the existing structure of Farringdon House Ice House for their Operational Base.

Farringdon Auxiliary Unit 6It is possible that the “entrance” has been created post war as the blocks appear damaged at the sides. If the block wall was complete, thus sealing off the original entrance passageway to the Ice House leaving only the tunnel, this would make escape more viable.

Ashbrittle Auxiliary Unit 8

We have added a very detailed report on the Ashbrittle Auxiliary Unit by Aux researcher Chris Perry and our Devon CIO Nina Hannaford.

The patrol were based at the village of Ashbrittle, 6 miles west of Wellington in south west Somerset.

What makes Ashbrittle’s Operational Base special is the level of work that went into the chimney and the remaining concrete air vent base moulded from concrete to resemble a tree.

See many images and more info on this patrol here.

Edgarley SD 2Edgarley ‘Chirnside Five’ – Special Duties Radio OUT Station has today been added to our Special Duties Branch microsite.

The Special Duties wireless set was recorded as operating out of a hut or box at Edgarley Manor Farm, Edgarley in Somerset. This was concealed as, or part of, a chicken house that was located between the farm house and Wick Lane.

There is some doubt over the actual operators of the station but the landowners (Captain) Kenneth and Dorothy Marsh have ideal credentials to be involved. Locally it is suggested a woman was the main operator.

Mabe Auxiliary Unit Patrol 4

Sgt. D Welch, Unknown, maybe Sgt. H Pascoe (Constantine), Ken Welch and maybe Cecil Sims (Perranwell) seen here inspecting Ken Welch’s Webley pistol.

Today we have added a fascinating report to the site on the Mabe Auxiliary Unit in Cornwall.

Mabe Auxiliary Unit Patrol 3Mabe is a parish to the South West of Penryn above the port of Falmouth.

The Aux Units were known for being very clever and disguising their Operational Bases but the Mabe Patrol took it one step further and built theirs into the side of the quarry spoil heap. (See left)

We know that some patrols were tasked with ‘taking out’ Nazi collaborators in the event of invasion but this patrol were tasked to kill an elderly couple who lived near the OB. We can’t imagine how that would have felt!
